			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Microphytes</strong> or <strong>microalgae</strong> are microscopic algae, typically found in freshwater and marine systems. There are 20,000 species. They are unicellular species which exist individually, or in chains or groups.<img src="http://healthrob.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Microalgae1.jpg" alt="Microalgae1" title="Microalgae1" width="200" height="193" class="alignright size-full wp-image-1045" />Depending on the species, their sizes can range from a few micrometers (µm) to a few hundreds of micrometers. Unlike higher plants, microalgae do not have roots, stems and leaves. Microalgae, capable of performing photosynthesis, are important for life on earth; they produce approximately half of the atmospheric oxygen and use simultaneously the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide to grow photoautotrophically. </p>
<p>Most of these microalgae species produce unique products like carotenoids, antioxidants, fatty acids, enzymes, polymers, peptides, toxins and sterols. Microalgae such as microphytes constitute the basic foodstuff for numerous aquaculture species, especially filtering bivalves. They provide them with vitamins and polyunsaturated fatty acids, necessary for the growth of the bivalves which are unable to synthesize it themselves.<br />
Microalgae have a high content of <strong>Astaxanthin</strong>, a carotenoid belonging to a larger class of phytochemicals known as terpenes. It is classified as a xanthophyll, which means &#8220;yellow leaves&#8221;. Like many carotenoids, it is a colorful, lipid-soluble pigment. Professor Basil Weedon was the first to map the structure of astaxanthin. Unlike some carotenoids, it does not convert to Vitamin A (retinol) in the human body. Too much Vitamin A is toxic for a human, but astaxanthin is not. However, it is a powerful antioxidant; it is claimed to be 10 times more capable than other carotenoids. However, other sources suggest astaxanthin as slightly lower antioxidant activity than other carotenoids.<br />

<strong>Chlorella</strong> is a fresh water single-celled microalga. Chlorella emerged over 2 billion years ago, and was the first form of a plant with a well-defined nucleus. Because Chlorella is a microscopic organism, it was not discovered until the late 19th century, deriving its name from the Greek, &#8220;chloros&#8221; meaning green and &#8220;ella&#8221; meaning small. <p>Phycocyanin, the blue pigment in spirulina, can act as a free radical scavenger and powerful antioxidant. Rat studies have demonstrated that phycocyanin can exert a wide range of anti-inflammatory effects. Experiments in mice show that phycocyanin can accelerate wound healing and may help in the healing of ulcers. A heaping tablespoon of spirulina provides about 100 mg of phycocyanin.<br />
The non-toxic pigment, phycocyanin, is used in the food and beverage industry as a natural blue coloring agent. It is used in sweets, soft drinks, chewing gum, ice cream, and other desserts as well as cosmetics. Spirulina is also added to health drinks. </p>
<p>There is data showing that spirulina possesses some anti-viral and anti-tumor properties. Preliminary animal data also suggests it may be useful as a lipid-lowering agent.<br />

Typically, blue-green algae is sold in tablet, capsule, or powder form. It is safe to use when consumed in recommended doses of 1 to 2 grams taken three times a day. Side effects are few, but allergies are known. Skin reactions, nausea and upset stomach have also been reported. Because of its high nucleic acid content, excessive consumption of spirulina may increase blood uric acid levels to undesirable levels. Due to the high iodine content of spirulina, patients with thyroid conditions should not use spirulina as it may decrease the action of thyroid hormone.<br />

Melatonin levels rise for about 12 hours, from around 9:00 p.m until approximately 9:00 a.m. Although the time of the night and day affects melatonin levels, light and darkness can be even more important factors. Melatonin is one of the least toxic substances known. The only consistent side effect of high doses has been drowsiness and a slower reaction time. However pregnant or nursing women should avoid it (since whether excessive exposure to the hormone might affect a fetus or infant is unknown) as well as people with severe allergies or autoimmune diseases (melatonin could exacerbate such conditions by stimulating the immune system) and healthy children (who already produce it in abundance).<br />

<p>The most interesting nutrient in Turmeric is <strong>Curcumin</strong>. This nutrient has received attention from the media because researchers are interested in Curcumin’s possibilities in fighting cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.  </p>
<p>The Curcumin in Turmeric is thought to work because it is a strong anti-inflammatory agent.<br />
The research on Turmeric so far appears to be very favorable.<br />
It appears that Turmeric mainly affects LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) and triglyceride levels.<br />
In one study Turmeric appeared to lower LDL cholesterol levels and triglycerides, as well as preventing LDL from being oxidized.<br />
Oxidized LDL has been shown to greatly accelerate the formation of atherosclerosis.<br />
The cholesterol-lowering effects of Turmeric have remained consistent in these studies.<br />
In fact, one study even concluded that LDL cholesterol was lowered anywhere between one-half and one-third of those subjects consuming Turmeric in comparison to those not receiving it.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Lately many articles have been published on mainstream newspapers discussing the benefit of taking vitamins and supplements:<br />

Recently there’s been a massive increase in the consumption of multivitamins’ and supplements.<br />
The reality is that taken in excess, these products can cause serious consequences and that their assumption should be overlooked by a GP, dietician or nutritionist to ensure the doses do not go beyond what’s necessary to the body for each single person.<br />
It is true that our diet is poor of vitamins, minerals and enzymes that boost nutrients’ absorption. But pills should never replace meals or be taken in large amounts each day and for long periods of time because their absorption is not the same as for natural foods.<br />
Our body does not have to get used to supplements and in order to avoid it:<br />
1- We should take a supplement for a maximum period of 30 days. Meanwhile if we detect unwanted symptoms we should suspend them immediately.<br />
2- We shouldn’t take a multivitamin supplement in the same period when we also take another supplement containing any type of the same vitamins. This is because our body will struggle to absorb all the vitamins (they are concentrated) and our organs will work hard to throw away what is not needed.<br />
If the body fails to do that we may be in worse troubles because we may develop strong intolerances to some of them and also unbalance and inhibit the production of natural essential substances such as insulin for example.<br />
Another example that vitamins are essential but are not the same as food, is pregnancy where the intake of supplements can be dangerous for the baby who before and after childbirth will absorb directly from the mother all its vital nutrients. On the other hand some specific types of supplement suggested by doctors promote a healthier development of the child (such as folic acid).<br />
Excess is not beneficial in nutrition and it always brings unwanted consequences for our body.<br />
We have to be especially careful to avoid excessive intake, in form of supplement, of the following:<br />
Vitamin A: excess vitamin A, which accumulates in the liver, led to headaches and nausea, and over a long period of time increases the risk of osteoporosis. Safe levels of vitamin A can easily be exceeded, for instance, by taking both multivitamin and fish oil supplements.<br />
Betacarotene (precursor of vitamin A): research has shown that if taken in form of supplement by smokers can expose them to a higher risk of lung cancer (read more here).<br />
Vitamin C: large doses of vitamin C &#8211; taken with the idea that it fights colds &#8211; may be harmless but are largely excreted and have unpleasant effects on the stomach and on the urinary tract.<br />
Vitamin E: research has shown that taking vitamins C and E after a workout appears to prevent physical exercise improving the body&#8217;s energy regulation.<br />
Taking for 20 to 30 days one type of vitamin or a complete multivitamin can really add to our regular diet and make us feel and look younger, but for longer than that will trick our body into getting used to it, therefore not needing any longer to metabolize to its best real foods to extract the nutrients we need and making our body and skin sensitized and more exposed to diseases and allergies, besides making it hard for our filtering organs to work properly.<br />
When it comes to add vitamin complements to our diet we should whether seek advice from professionals on our nutrition and vitamins needs OR take supplements little at the time for brief periods only to boost our intake and give our body a variety of all it needs but without excessive doses, thinking of what ingredients are really likely to be missing in our typical diet, following our common sense and tuning in with the signals our body sends to us.</p>
